When I create an element type of a lighting fixture the name in the outliner will be IfcFlowTerminal/FlowTerminal is there a way to give another name after the backslash or is this against some ifc naming convention. This would need to be already in the element type or is there a bulk rename option.

you can rename it to anything, after the foward slash.
not sure about a bulk renaming utility. A search/replace in the IFC text file might work.

Press Ctrl + F2.
There's native Blender functionality to batch rename things:

And in the add-on settings of BlenderBIM you could select type instead of class,

Feature request, can't the default be set to By Type? I don't know why anyone would use the class since the IFC element is alreayd in front of the slash.

I guess there is a bulk renaming...

Thanks to a recent change by @Andrej730 you can just bulk rename and ignore the whole / slash thing, it'll auto insert slashes as necessary.
