So, what do you want from the community, or what do you envision? Will you kickstart this new format?
So, what do you want from the community, or what do you envision? Will you kickstart this new format?
Why invent new formats when there are dozens of already popular formats - OBJ, gLTF, DAE, FBX or at least USD. And for properties I think there is no problem to transfer data in any formats from CSV, XLSX, SQL , HDF5, DB to XML, JSON, YAML. Why do we need new formats if all other industries already use geometric formats and formats for transferring meta-information.
The problem of the construction industry was that for some reason openBIM does not notice that the current policy to promote IFC is beneficial only to those companies that can work with the geometric core.
Tools should be simpler, faster and more accessible. And exactly without using a geometry kernel with tens of millions of lines and without using various paid SDKs.
Instead of inventing everything from scratch, you should take existing tools and refine them. Here are some interesting examples:
SolveSpace - almost browser-ready.
Web-CAD.org - JavaScript editor with prospects.
CSG editor - builds models based on the Signed Distance Field
There's also Unity, which is already suitable for building complex tools. It's a ready-made platform where you can change the rendering and add the features you want. For Example -If you want to use geometric solvers online and for free, here's a project:
https://github.com/NoteCAD/NoteCAD
I rewrote its UI in 2021 and made it as similar to free online SketchUp as possible.
This product is lightweight and completely open source, and even has its own geometric solver. If you add more metadata to such a tool - you will get a like Sketchup - only fully OpenSource, online and without restrictions: https://github.com/BimCad-online
If any format is possible, why not IFC in blender and freecad?
To display IFC-BREP, a geometric kernel is required. If MESH, then OBJ, gLTF can be used. And it is not clear why the IFC ontology is needed, which has almost never been developed anywhere
