Renaming Spatial Structure

  1. F

I have tried renaming these parameters by editing the text on the left hand side browser tree. Unfortunately, even if I edit the text, if I close and come in the values go back to their old values.

I am assuming I am doing this incorrectly.!

to assign an entitiy to a particular container you can

    • select the object/s to move

    • select the container in Spatial Decomposition

    • click on the "arrow-to-folder" icon as shown here

    !

How do I go about renaming a container?

double click on its name in the Spatial Decomposition panel or select it and edit from Object Information > Object Metadata > Attributes

If I'm not mistaken @Flies_Eyes is asking to rename "IfcBuilding/Main Steelwork" to just "Main Steelwork". As far as I know Bonsai does that automatically. But if you try to open the file with another viewer you will see that the building name is just "Main Steelwork".

    @atomkarinca

OK, I think the same applies, "IfcBuilding/Main Steelwork" is the way it displays it in the panel, not the actual name, which is "Main Steelwork"

go to Object Information > Object Metadata > Attributes and check the Name attribute to confirm it

    cheers

Note the version string in @Flies_Eyes screenshot - BlenderBIM Addon v0.something

@steverugi You are probably giving incorrect instructions, as I'm pretty sure you are running a more up-to-date version, i.e. Bonsai.

apologies, stable version had a slightly different UI, please see the image below

Yes, I think this could be why this is still not working for me. I am running Stable 4.0.2. When I try to use the icon with clipboard with the arrow I still don't get any action. Maybe I need to update my system to get this to work. Do we know if this works in older versions and I am just following the right workflow?

sorry, do you need to rename your container or to move elements to a particular one? can you screenshot? thanks

Yeah, 4.0.2 is the Blender version. Your screenshot has actually chopped of the last digit of the BlenderBim version, but I think that 0.7 was the last release called BlenderBIM before it was renamed. I would suggest you at least upgrade to the latest Blender LTS (4.2). This way you will get access to the extensions platform which is used for distributing Bonsai now. That will put you on Bonsai v0.8.1. This is much more current, and a lot has changed. Then it is much easier for those of us on the bleeding edge releases (v0.8.2 alpha) to help you as there are much fewer differences.

Yeah, at this point I am just testing the process of renaming my container. I can rename it by editing the IFC file with Notepad, however I am looking at how this can be done with Bonsai and then eventually to build an automated process with python.

You don't need to edit the ifc file as I wrote earlier

as @sjb007 suggested it's highly recommended to update both Blender and Bonsai at least to their latest stable release

    Cheers

  1. F

Yeah, I am going look into getting the latest release loaded and then learning how the new update system works for extension which I have heard is now done from inside the application. I had been using the Blender Launcher to manage my versions. Is the Blender Launcher now redunant or is that still a good tool to run to manage versions?

  1. J

OT, but I recommend using blender launcher. I have one Blender LTS version with a stable release for my projects, one Blender/Bonsai developer version for testing and one older version for Topologic for example.

So upgrading to the latest version of Blender and Bonsai has made renaming easy! Thanks for everybody's advice and assistance, much appreciated.

Let see if I can now write the python scripts to automate these processes.
