While some may argue the soft is behind a paywall, providing open source solution through a store is huge incentive for users to "contribute".
In the end of the day, even a small fee may worth it as it allow further improvements available to every single serious user.
When it comes to compare "contribute" button and store front incomes, the difference is over two magnitudes in range and may be the difference between struggeling to raise funds and successfully funded projects.
If you take a look at open source developper status, at this time there are only a handfull projects able to generate decent incomes for developpers using the "donate" model.
I think it's a good idea for devs to charge, and the FSF recommends charging as well.
