Welcome to the OSArch Community - Introduce yourself here.

  1. V

Hello everyone, my name is Vinícius, glad to be here!

  2. H

    Hello everyone,

I'm Hannes, a German civil engineer. Previously, I've been involved in computer science and programming, mainly in the web context. Alongside a small team, we operate a small engineering company specializing in the planning and supervision of infrastructure projects. This encompasses roads, sewers, water/gas pipes, district heating, electricity, and more.

With the advent of IFC4x3, BIM aspects are finally gaining traction within our industry. Currently, I'm immersing myself in the IFC Schema, IfcOpenShell, and BlenderBIM. Another area of research is automated quality control and quantity takeoff.

There are two publicly available repositories:

    • ibb-woern/ibb-ifc: This repository takes the IFC file, generated by our proprietary domain-specific software, and performs schema corrections, checks, and quantity takeoff.

    • ibb-woern/isy-ifc: This is a research project that takes an XML file with sewer data and generates an IFC file from it. The primary aim is to gain a better understanding of the IFC schema and IfcOpenShell.

I'm excited about the seemingly endless possibilities that come to mind when I came across the NativeIFC concept.

    Regards,

    Hannes

    Hello everybody!

I'm Francisco, Brazilian architect and urban planner (São Paulo), master in projects and doctor in urban planning from UPC, Barcelona. I have been using free software since 2006 (GNULinux) and FreeCAD since 2014 in my professional activities. On the FreeCAD Forum I posted about various topics involving BIM, some of which have already been mentioned here.

At the end of 2022, I ventured into the world of development with Python and created the Movie Workbench (https://github.com/Francisco-Rosa/FreeCAD-Movie/tree/master), which I would really like to receive opinions and suggestions. I will be glad to answer any questions regarding this WB or any other matter relating to one of my posts.

    Greetings,

    Francisco.

    Hi everyone

I'm a landscape architect and work for different companies. Hoping to start one soon by myself.

I have worked with almost any software before, from Civil, AutoCad, Vectorworks, Archicad, Maya. But I mostly enjoyed Rhino and Blender. And now, i'm exploring the possibilities of BlenderBim. I'm interested in creating a time-saving workflow and automate all the boring stuff :)

Ecology is a big part of my practice, most important are plants. I'd like to contribute to bring plants and ecology to the BIM-World. The reason behind all this, is that most customers do not want to spend money on our environment and a landscape office is usually on a tight budget, so doing this extra work is hard. With BIM I'm hoping to speed up this process to create more value with less money. Besides that I'm doing some research projects, most of them would be best implemented in to practice with BIM.

I'd like to contribute but I'm not sure how exactly, since I can only code small stuff, but I'm far from a developer. I think the biggest contribution I could make is sharing my workflow, which I'm working on.

Hey @Beyon and others, I’ve recently joined the Autodesk Developer Community as a member for product development purposes and I wanted to start a Twitch channel while I’m developing using their various technologies, the Revit API, Forma, ACC, APS, BIM 360, Fusion, etc. - as well as the fact it will naturally be through C# / C++ and Python / Node for interfaces with Gemini, OpenAI API, OSM etc. (kind of like a “work with me” style channel.

After the live streams, I’ll edit the videos down and add to them, then prepare sample files etc and make it available via a platform as a set of courses and individual videos. Is this something that you (and others here) would be interested in? It would go from basics, through the APIs, through specific tasks, and all the way up to advanced C# & cloud infrastructure (naturally broken down into modules and components to suit everyone’s needs).

Is this something people would be interested in? I’d love feedback and suggestions for content.

    @whoisryan

Yes, very much! Although I have to admit, that I'm personally trying to rely only on Blender and Rhino. Mainly because I like the cause of OpenSource (yes, rhino isn't) and the active community sharing the same goal.

Hello, I'm Nick, a brazilian engineer currently working in Spain

  12. E

    Hi Folks,

currently i'm working as BIM manager for the developer.

10+ years in the AEC industry as the architect, project manager and the site architectural supervisor.

Sometimes I still work as design architect, coordinating technical specification writing, engineering solutions and architectural ideas.

I speak PHP, Python and C, can understand JavaScript, HTML, C++ , C#, Ruby and Perl.

Revit as the main modelling tool, Archicad as the need.

  13. S

    Hi folks,

my name is Smiljan and I am an experienced Civil Engineer with a proven track record in the AEC and computer software industry for the last 10 years. My skills include agile software development, Finite Element Modeling (FEM), and various aspects of Civil Engineering.

Dion's LinkedIn post about Blender and OpenBIM blew me away. I first encountered Blender while learning Unity in my spare time, and it never occurred to me that it could be such a powerful, free tool for BIM and the AEC industry. 🤩

🔥 Presently, my primary focus lies on Open BIM, a process aimed at enhancing collaboration among project stakeholders to achieve heightened transparency and longevity of data throughout the entire lifecycle of a building. Open BIM stands as the preferred path to circumvent the monopolization of the construction industry by a few software companies, ensuring greater accessibility, interoperability, and a level playing field for all stakeholders. Without the adoption of open BIM standards, the peril of becoming beholden to a single software vendor grows, including the risk of vendor lock-in.

💻 I’m familiar with programming languages like Python, C/C++, Dart, and C#, and I’ve also worked with VBA to create macros. Additionally, I utilize batch programming and PowerShell to automate processes. Besides that, I have experience in web development, both frontend and backend (e.g. Django Framework), database relations, and cloud computing, which gives me a broad range of skills in software development. While I may not consider myself a top-level programming expert, my programming knowledge is sufficient for my needs and allows me to accomplish my objectives effectively.

📷 I love graphic design, and it significantly enhances my UX and UI design skills. It helps me create attractive and user-friendly interfaces by combining creativity and aesthetics effectively.

⚡ As an engineer, I try to support different open source projects out there. Open source is a philosophy and a movement, and what makes open source thrive is the community around it. I get to meet great people that way!!!

🌱 In my free time, I love to walk and enjoy nature. Being in nature gives me new energy!

I think that connecting is a great way of seeing other people's work and get inspired.

Welcome everybody! @NickNunes what type of engineer are you?

@ejs and @smiljan_tukic it sounds like both of you have excellent programming skills! Have you considered contributing to the code of some open source projects?

  15. N

Civil Engineer! My bad, not very good at introducing myself. I also really like programming but mostly lack the skills. I do some basic stuff in C#, hoping to learn more and maybe contribute a bit too.

Hi everybody. Im André from Mexico, im an Architectural Engineering Student here in Mexico City, i'm trying to migrate from Archicad to Freecad and i hope i can do it, so far i really like the multiple alternatives we have to other software and i believe the vision of OSArch will help a lot of students and professionals to have more than one way to work. Also i'm part of the "National League of Architecture Students" looking forward to have an event to share the OSArch Vision and hopefully convince colleagues to use open source alternatives.

Hi Everyone , I am an architect and planner from Kerala,India interested in Free and Open Source Culture.

I was using revit for bim and now struggling to shift to open source alternatives. Upgraded one of my computers to Linux, doing 3D modelling in Blender (getting used with BlenderBIM) , 2D drawings in LibreCAD and Inkscape, documentations in LibreOffice etc. I have also developed my own website using python and javascript libraries - https://arunarchitect.in/ . Eventhough I am not an expert am deeply interested in programming . Thanks to @Moult and fellow companions in the community for making me motivated. Enlighten me in the field:)

  22. U

Do you have some road map that you follow along the development of this tool?... I mean a long term plan..

  23. G

    Hi everyone!

I am a civil engineer with a great interest in programming and automation. I develop programs to optimize project development and coordination. Always looking for new technologies and very excited about the development of IFC.

  24. V

    Hi all,

My name is Valentin (Val for short) and I'm a generalist with the skillset spanning across bridge, civil structures, tunnels, rail and road furniture design, BIM implementation, workflow diagramming, visual scripting and coding.

I've been always interested in open standards and opened ways of working in general. I've started embracing direct iFC authoring about a year ago, initially with GeometryGym Grasshopper Plug-In cause I am most comfortable with that environment. Been putting off getting my hands dirty with BlenderBIM and Sverchok, and finally got a courage this year to start practically using it , initially for iFC models Quality Review and Data Extraction.

Some workflows I'd be interested to explore first:

    1. DXF processing and automated conversion to attributed iFC model. I reckon it might be doable with a combination of Sverchok, BlenderBIM and some custom iFC element libraries specific to each discipline (Street Lighting/ Simple road furniture, etc)

    2. Procedural Generation of iFC Type Libraries.

    3. Structured data reading (json/xml) and automated generation of attributed iFC models.

    4. iFC Model review and reporting.

I feel like my journey is only starting and I'm happy to join this vibrant community and hopefully start bringing back some fruits of my discoveries to the industry.

Hi everyone, I am Antonio and I am a building engineer from Italy.

I have read the OSArch community posts for some time and have finally joined. I've been linux user (side-by-side with windows) since 2007 and first came in contact with BlenderBim in 2021/22 while looking for BIM software that would run on linux. I left BBIM for a while and got back in touch with it in 2023. In the last few months I have literally devoured Bimvoice and Dion youtube videos learning a lot about IFC schema and I am currently writing my postgraduate master's thesis on IDS.

My future goals are to start learning programming and go deep into BlenderBIM.
