Does anything exist for structural steel detailing? I'm seeking an alternative to Tekla Structures, or at least its core 3D-to-2D drawing features.

i would guess that Freecad is probably a good place to start and/or for structural analysis of steel details the software https://github.com/xcfem/xc could also be interesting.

@alxstmfrg I've moved your discussion here for better clarity. @Jesusbill what's your take on the question?

my vote would be FreeCAD. In the regard of connections FreeCAD FEM perfectly fits as well.

@bernd @yorik Any thought could the Dodo WB objects comply with / be adjusted to comply with IFC / Native-ifc standards?

Dodo WB is not 'shipped' with BIM wb, yet; should it be ?

All FreeCAD objects are supported by NativeIFC already. Only, objects are converted via the current Arch IFC export structure, which might not support all features and specificities one might want for a certain type of object. But it's easy to add or extend, so I'd say yes by all means start using Dodo, I think it's the best metal frame toolbox we have in FreeCAD at the moment. If something is missing NativeIFC-wise, we'll adapt.

Note that I'm not sure how far Dodo has tools for detailing. However, that can be done with standard FreeCAD tools too... There is a good Fasteners addon too for that.

Update, See Issue on github :

    • Free, but Not open source

    • Seems not available for Linux at the moment

Osdag is a cross-platform free/libre and open-source software for the design (and detailing) of steel structures, following the Indian Standard IS 800:2007. It allows the user to design steel connections, members and systems using a graphical user interface. The interactive GUI provides a 3D visualisation of the designed component and an option to export the CAD model to any drafting software for the creation of construction/fabrication drawings. The design is typically optimised following industry best practices.
