Rebranding the BlenderBIM Add-on - vote for a new name!

    Ok! So this is the key point. On the back of your head you may already know that this is moving away from Blender. And as a consequence, it wouldn't make sense to push for keeping the BlenderBIM naming today and eventually move to a webapp in a couple of years.

    I totally get it. The only drawback I feel exists is that in an ideal world, from a marketing standpoint, the rebranding should come at the launch of that webapp. If by the BF new policy, we're doing it before, I believe that at the announcement, it should be clearly explained to our users that things are coming in the future outside of Blender. That could help mitigate astonishment or indiference and turn it into some hype.

    Imagine a conversation

    "What do you use for BIM"

    "I use Bunny Rabbit"

    If not anything it's a conversation starter, we have a slogan "hopping to new heights" lol

    It could just be Rabbit but as Dion said might be too close to Revit

    My two cents on the topic, I trust the members of this forum to make a good decision.

    Ps.: turns out Bunny is a baby Rabbit... Who knew, not me ---- scratch that, turns out I was wrong lol

    That was my first idea "the mascot behind".

    Like penguin linux, monkey blender, emule, that thing used by godot.......

    Terra is often found in creative writing and is Latin for earth. IfcTerra and IfcOpenTerra are my favorite sounds because the S in IfcOpenShell is followed by a T.

    IFC that makes the earth Open is wonderful!

    why it should be an explanatory name.

    It's the same dificult situation when a client who want a logo for his bakery tells you that the logo must have a cake. :/

    @Fena my wife whose first language isn't English agrees with you :) She doesn't agree on BunnyBIM though, saying it doesn't sound professional.

    BTW we do have some "unused" branding graphics that can be recycled, like this one we currently use on OpenCollective but could easily repurpose into a new logo if the old "B" shape doesn't work:

    IfcOpenSuite sounds generic and unprofessional. Try speaking the name out loud. Too long, too complicated, it's a tongue twister for everyone whose first language isnt english.

    I thought you guys were architects 😅

    I'm with BunnyBIM. It rolls out of the tongue, you can just reuse most of the branding material, and has BIM in its name so people will know what's it about.

    In the spirit of stealing classes from IFC (IfcOpenShell) I'm going to go out on a limb and actually suggest IfcProject as a name :)

    Or if IfcProject is too confusing, I also like IfcElement?

    I like one of the followings:

    1. To be neutral and consistent

    IfcSuite

    This simply indicates what it does. The words like design, create, forge, etc sound suitable at a designing and building phase but not at an asset management phase.

    2. To rebrand completely

    Burrow

    With this great tool, users can dive into the underground of ifc data and find something special. (We may encounter a rabbit somewhere in the meantime)

    By the way, I am not a native speaker of English, so the nature of this word may not sound like in the way I intend...

    A heads up that we now have some closure from the Blender Foundation. In that they would discourage, but not actively prevent using Blender in the domain name. If the domain name were "BIMForBlender.org" (their brand seems to focus on Blender as a prefix, not a suffix) he would not complain. He reiterates to try to pick an original name with the community.

    Just a reminder that due to the tight timeline, on the 12th (Monday) we'll take the top three and pick from that :) So please continue adding votes, names, (or taking away your vote if you change your mind), etc :)

    TL;DR suggestion is: Bifcad "bifcad Ifc Add-on for Blender with a Bunny mascot" domain is short, pronounceable, and available. Unlike searching the web for "studio" or "design" you get something that is not diluted by many other similar results.

    The project is married closely to Ifc. We know it currently in form and function as a Blender Ifc Addon, with a rabbit (bunny) mascot.

    Due to the (very reasonable) request of Blender to guard their registered mark, replace "Blender" with any word that is not Blender but also contains a "B" letter-sound: Bunny, Rabbit, BIM, Builder, Habitat, or recursion "bifcad" itself.

    Rabbit is a sound-alike to "Revit". Is this problematic or funny? Bunny IFC Addon => bifcad

    If people continue to informally refer to it as the bifcad Blender IFC Addon? No harm to Blender's registered mark is done.

    Further if you want to get into branding you can say the development team is actually some kind of Rabbit or Bunny naming, however you like. Then the products (?) IfcOpenShell and Bifcad are further identified by that.

    For the upside-down folks also be sure to pick up beefcad* websites, because it sounds alike.

    I like "IfcOpenSuite" because the project is indeed a suite of programs/utilities and I find it important to state, that is an open source project.

    Just tossing on on the side line, as i want the more active user to have a more direct decision. Though in general a name should be short and self explanatory. Also considering when you do search on any search engine, would the addon be found with ease? Should it be with relation to the word "open", for people who want to find open source, or free alternatives? Or should the new name be more designed so any search would lead newcomers here?

    Thus, could it be something as simple as:

    • IFC BIM

    • IFC Maker.

    • IFC Editer.

    • Open IFC.

    • Open BIM

    Nice! Sounds like bureau (desk) in french. Also Rhino, Grasshopper, Ladybug or Python are good brands i find

    @Moult IfcProject would be some cringe corporate productivity tool, however IfcElement has a good sound (though maybe tricky for some east Asian speakers?) suggests solidity, simplicity and centrality. Domain appears to be available.

    Suggestion: nativeifc.org

    IFCStudio is OK too, but I like the key idea of using the notion of Native IFC
